My VPN worked just fine until I started watching Netflix. A new problem was discovered on my cozy Saturday nights – Netflix Not Working with the VPN.
What in the world was causing this stupid problem?
When I was watching House of Cards, I got the following message:
You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.
Do you experience the same while using a VPN?
This is one of the most common questions, I get from readers who want to use my Netflix VPN guide, or from people who have already tried it out.
Whether or not it still works with Netflix or if it ever worked at all (and why). Because it is obvious to get surprised when you noticed it stopped working sometime.
And you might get afraid and suddenly a list of questions strikes your mind.
What happened?
Why did this happen?
Do I need to be concerned about being sued by the MPAA or my ISP?
Stoppppppp!
Don’t worry. I am here to help you. If you’re confused and don’t know what to do.
As I Tried Using a VPN with Netflix and it Didn’t Work – Here’s What I Did Instead.
In this guide, I’ll talk about what happened, and what didn’t work. Also what I ended up doing instead was unblocking Netflix successfully every time.
You can use it to unblock Netflix and any other streaming site no matter where you are in the world. First of all, I figured out what the actual problem is.
Why is Netflix Not Working with VPN?
What does it mean when Netflix says I can’t access the content because of licensing restrictions?
Netflix is trying to stop VPN users.
Netflix wants to block VPNs and detect proxy servers, so it can tell if you’re using a proxy server or other ways of hiding your location.
Netflix also wants to prevent proxies from working, which means that the company has been looking for ways to detect proxies and block them to keep people from accessing its content illegally.
Moreover, let us put light on how to solve this problem in several ways quickly.
This may be done by signing up for a reliable VPN service like NordVPN, which now offers a discount of 68%.
The NordVPN service comes with a free three-month trial when you sign up for it. Also, you are now ready to continue with the setup and installation.
Method 1: Setting Up Your VPN – Don’t Ignore!
NordVPN is compatible with Netflix.
Once I set up my account, all that was left to do was change the Netflix region in settings.
This is where you have to be careful because some people have had success with region settings but most of the time changing your Netflix region does not work.
Once you are successful in changing the Netflix region, NordVPN would automatically get installed on your device. Netflix did not work but when I tried again it worked once more!
So this was one of the easiest ways if your VPN not working with Netflix anymore.
Method 2: Ask Customer Support for the Best Server
To get up and running on their service, I just had to fill out some paperwork, which they promptly processed.
The team is super friendly as well as knowledgeable!
Note: If you wish to have a second income source, then you can sign up for the NordVPN affiliate program without hesitating.
One of the great things about NordVPN is that it has an excellent customer service team. This means you can reach them via live chat or by email anytime day or night for assistance.
That could be important if you have an issue in the middle of the night where you need help accessing your devices from home. They are also available if you want to cancel your service at any time or have billing questions or other concerns.
Method 3: Change VPN Protocol
When connecting to NordVPN, select the Automatic option on the drop-down menu instead of choosing one of the protocols. Doing this will make sure that NordVPN automatically chooses which protocol is best for your location.
This is a simple workaround if you are currently located in a country other than the one in which you would like to have access to Netflix. You shouldn’t leave without reading our NordVPN reviews, either.
Method 4: Stream Netflix on Your Computer
Having said that, following Netflix’s decision to ban the use of VPNs. It’s possible that Netflix won’t work with the VPN. Sure enough, after I installed NordVPN in my browser, I was able to stream from Netflix without any issues.
Then, to get an even better result, they also provide something called smart play. It will connect you to the nearest server (regardless of where you are), which would give you better speeds.
My internet speed seemed faster as well (some blogs have said that streaming through NordVPN could potentially speed up your internet).
Needless to say, these worked for me! For those people who think of themselves as inexperienced or lazy when it comes to securing their network online: don’t worry– this is so easy!
Method 5: Connect to a Different Server
I can tell you from experience that using a VPN to bypass content blocking on Netflix doesn’t always work. When that happens, here are some alternatives you can try:
1. Connect to a Different Server.
One of the reasons why this might not be working is because there are servers (countries) where content is more restricted than others.
So if you’re trying to unblock American content, for example, try connecting to a server in Canada or Mexico.
This could make all the difference in allowing access to restricted content!
2. Change Your Smart DNS Service Provider
Some people will find success in changing their DNS settings or switching service providers.
Method 6: Delete Browser Cookies and Cache
This will delete all of the information stored in your browser, including any personal information that may have been saved as well.
You can delete cookies and cache by going to the Tools drop-down menu in your browser and then selecting Internet Options.
Once you are in there, make sure to click on the General tab at the top of the window.
Underneath where it says Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Cookies. A pop-up box should appear asking if you are sure about deleting all of these files. Select yes and confirm.
Method 7: Disable IPv6 Addresses
My first step was to try disabling IPv6 addresses. IPv6 is what enables us to access the Internet through Wi-Fi, even if we’re not on a hotspot.
Disabling this protocol on your computer could make connecting via VPN less of an issue.
- You can do this by going into Control Panel -> Network Connections. There you’ll find your network connection (probably a Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection).
- Right-click it.
- Go to Properties -> TCP/IPv4 -> Advanced.
- From there, disable both: Obtain an IP address automatically as well as Use the default gateway on the remote network.
Method 8: Use Smart DNS
Smart DNS is one option for unlocking geo-restricted content like Netflix without using a VPN. For this to work, your internet service provider (ISP) must provide access to the Smart DNS system.
Note that not all ISPs support Smart DNS, so be sure to check before you buy.
Conclusion
With this guide, hopefully, some of you will be able to access the Netflix content you desire.
Whether you want to access all Netflix areas or just a few, this article will help you get the most out of your Netflix subscription by using NordVPN.
